Water activities on the Gandía coast: summer in the Mediterranean

July is the month when the Mediterranean becomes the centre of life on the Gandía coast. The water reaches perfect temperatures, the sun shines relentlessly and the range of water activities is almost endless. From Casa Filo in Xeresa, you are only 10 minutes away by car from the beach, allowing you to combine rural rest with the excitement of the sea.
Paddleboarding: balance and tranquillity on the water
Paddleboarding, or SUP, is one of the most popular activities in recent years on Gandía beach. It involves a large board that you stand on and paddle. It looks easy, but requires balance and a bit of practice. The best thing is that you do not need prior experience: the beach schools offer beginner classes and rent equipment by the hour.
L'Ahuir beach is ideal for starting out because the water is usually calmer than at Playa Norte. Getting up early is rewarded: first thing in the morning the sea is calm, the sun is not as strong and you can paddle almost alone.
Kayaking: exploring the coast from another angle
By kayak you can explore stretches of coast that are not accessible on foot. Some popular routes from Gandía include:
- From Gandía to l'Ahuir: an easy route of about 4 kilometres that lets you see the coast from the sea and reach a quieter beach.
- South towards Daimúz: stretches of coast with low cliffs and hidden coves where you can stop to swim.
- Marjal de Gandía: kayaking through the wetland, a different experience mixing fresh and salt water, surrounded by vegetation and birds.
Rental kayaks are usually sit-on-top type, very stable and hard to capsize. A life jacket is always mandatory and it is wise to check the weather forecast before heading out.
Snorkelling and diving: the world beneath the surface
Although the Gandía coast is not a professional diving destination, snorkelling offers surprises. The clear summer water lets you see rock fish, octopus, starfish and posidonia meadows. The best spots to put on your mask and snorkel are:
- The Playa Norte breakwater: rocks that attract marine life.
- Rocky areas between l'Ahuir and el Grau: more interesting seabeds than flat sand.
- The posidonia meadows off the beach: posidonia grasslands that are the lungs of the Mediterranean and refuge for many species.
For tank diving, the Gandía diving club organises guided dives and beginner courses. July is a good time because underwater visibility improves with the heat.
Boat trips: sunsets from the sea
One of the most relaxing experiences is getting on a boat and seeing the coast from the outside. Boat trips from Gandía port include:
- Short trips: one-hour tours around the bay, ideal for families with children.
- Sunset cruises: evening departures with music and cava. The sun setting behind the coastline is a spectacle best seen from the water.
- Excursions to Isla del Portichol: although closer to Jávea, some boats organise half-day routes with a swim stop.
Surf and windsurf: when the waves come
Gandía beach is not a famous surf spot, but when there is a levante storm, local surfers head to Playa Norte to take advantage of the waves. Windsurfing also has its place, especially on tramontana days when the wind blows strongly. If you are interested, it is worth checking wave and wind forecasts before heading out.
Practical tips for summer
- Protect yourself from the sun: the Mediterranean in July is harsh. Use water-resistant sunscreen, a cap and sunglasses.
- Stay hydrated: bring water even on short activities. The heat in the water is less noticeable, but it dehydrates.
- Book in advance: in July rentals and excursions fill up. Better to call a few days ahead.
- Check the flags: if the flag is red, do not enter the water. Calm seas can be deceptive, but a rip current is dangerous.
- Respect the posidonia: do not anchor in the meadows and do not step on the seabed where there is marine vegetation. It is a protected and essential ecosystem.
Casa Filo: your base for summer
After a day of paddleboarding, kayaking or snorkelling, returning to Casa Filo is a luxury. Shower, dinner in the courtyard, rest in a cool stone house with wooden beams. The next day, the sea awaits you again. The balance between activity and rest is what makes a summer stay in the area special.
